In 1846, Joachim Johann Daniel Zerk settled in Hoffnungsthal (one of the original Barossa Valley settlements near the town of Lyndoch) and purchased what he considered to be the perfect site for a vineyard for 200 pounds. With more than 170 years of heritage in the region, fifth-generation Barossa Valley residents and sisters Janelle and Kristen Zerk began producing wines from a select parcel of shiraz from the vineyard where they grew up. Taking the wine industry by storm with their award-winning wine brand, Z WINE, the sisters produce more than 10,000 cases per year.

In 1998, Janelle attended Adelaide University to study a Bachelor of Oenology and was the first Zerk to become a winemaker. She has worked on more than twenty vintages all around the world, including Australia, France, Italy and America. Janelle and Kristen’s childhood experience on the family vineyard prepared them for their own successful wine brand. In 2017, Z WINE opened its cellar door on the main street of Tanunda to showcase its exclusive collection of Barossa Valley wines.

The winery is rated five stars and named ‘Best of Region’ in the Halliday Wine Companion 2020. This is considered one of the most prestigious winery awards in Australia, and it is something that the Zerk sisters successfully work together to accomplish.

Z WINE shows the Barossa Valley’s true character, and its wines are carefully produced by Janelle and Kristen. The grapes are sourced from only the best vineyards across the prestigious Barossa Valley. Local regional food is perfectly matched to its range of wines. The Z WINE team believe that quality should never be compromised and that wine should be savoured.

Local Barossa Valley produce is served on all platters, including Maggie Beer products, relishes and pickles from Zimmy’s Barossa Valley Produce and Cornucopia Farming olive oil, as well as cheese from The Barossa Valley Cheese Company.

High-quality fruit, winemaking techniques and presentation make the Z WINE product a positively sophisticated and elegant drink. The wines capture the past with soul and style, while displaying an inspiring modern twist. They are all handcrafted in small batches, with bottles individually numbered to denote the winery’s high-quality wines. With Z WINE, you know you are purchasing a unique product.

Z WINE invites you to linger longer and be spoilt like a Barossan. An exclusive range of handcrafted wines are available at the cellar door, including the Z WINE, Sing Vigneron Series, Section 3146, RUSTICA, and Hedley & Audrey labels.

Tasting Notes

Z Wine_Saul
⇐ 2018 Saul Riesling

Sourced from vineyards in the Eden Valley, the Saul Riesling exudes characters of lemon, lime and guava, which are supported by floral notes. The focused palate displays citrus flavours, stunning purity and mineral notes with crisp acidity. Serve chilled with fresh oysters, chilli prawn skewers or cured Atlantic salmon. Rated 95/100 by Halliday Wine Companion.

⇐ 2017 Roman GSM

The Roman GSM brings perfume and cinnamon spice to the forefront. The shiraz adds structure and dark chocolate flavours, followed by a dense layer of dark berries from the mataro. The wine’s depth and complexity comes from the carefully blended grapes, which have complementary flavours. Serve with Peking duck, quinoa, braised venison or any game meats. Rated 97/100 by Halliday Wine Companion.

⇐ 2017 Julius Shiraz

The Julius Shiraz is the winery’s carefully produced premium flagship wine. The brooding and succulent blackberry and forest-berry fruits are infused with dark chocolate tannins, with hints of vanilla from the structural French oak. Indulge in this opulent shiraz with aged vintage cheese. Rated 94/100 by Halliday Wine Companion.

2018 Hilder Ancestor Vine Mataro

Made from a biodynamic vineyard with minimal intervention, these vines are believed to be 145 years old. Wild-fermented and matured for eight months in oak, this is arguably one of the most perfect of the ancestor vine wines. Handpicked, wild fermented and basket-pressed, this wine presents savoury notes of spice and a background ripe with forest fruit. Rated 98/100 by Halliday Wine Companion.
