Whistling Kite Biodynamic Wines

Whistling Kite Biodynamic Wines

Whistling Kite Biodynamic Wines is a family-owned and -operated winery that was established in 1976 by husband-and-wife duo Tony and Pam Barich. Passionate about the environment and implementing sustainable practices amongst their impressive 15-hectares of vines, the couple converted the property to Certified Organic status in 1997, and have successfully implemented biodynamic agricultural practices for the last fifteen years.

These practices are based on a holistic approach to farming, including a level of spirituality and lunar cycle influences, creating increased vigour and vitality in the plantings. In 2010, Whistling Kite Biodynamic Wines was officially founded, and the winery has continued to prosper and evolve ever since. The full range of wines now covers petit manseng, viognier, mencia and petit verdot, among others.

The cellar door overlooks one of the longest straights of Australia’s longest river, the mighty Murray, where many spectacular organic and biodynamic wines can be savoured by visitors. Whistling Kite Biodynamic Wines has won several awards, the most notable being of international recognition, winning the 2018 South Australian Best of Wine Tourism Award for Sustainable Tourism Practices, as part of the Great Wine Capitals of The World program.

Tasting Notes

2017 Whistling Kite Wines Sparkling Petit Verdot
⇐ 2017 Whistling Kite Wines Sparkling Petit Verdot

The second iteration of the Sparkling Petit Verdot, a 2017 vintage was a wild yeast ferment to barrel, before spending three years in the bottle to be disgorged in December 2020. This is an exquisite fruit-driven wine with a light, almost silky effervescence complemented by a wonderfully balanced acidity.

Whistling Kite Wines Classic Late Picked Petit Manseng
⇐ Whistling Kite Wines Classic Late Picked Petit Manseng

This wine has been lovingly crafted since 2012 and blended to produce an incredibly unique fortified wine. Rich golden hues join a bouquet of freshly baked fruitcake and a slight note of summer fruits on the nose, followed by a full, textural palate that starts with candied fruit flavours and golden syrup, finishing with flavours of smoky caramel and honey.
