The Stoke Wines

Nick and Rebecca Dugmore first established The Stoke Wines in 2016, located on the mainland in Mount Jagged. The fact the winery is based on the mainland – specifically on a beautiful farm called Boho Farm – makes The Stoke Wines incredibly unique, giving mainlanders the opportunity to taste wines that they would often otherwise find very difficult to get.

The vineyard is situated near Stokes Bay on the north coast of Kangaroo Island, a stunning site with a north-east facing aspect and 4-hectares under vine. Being 150 metres above sea level, the fruit benefits from mild temperatures both day and night, leading to a long, slow-ripening period perfect for tannin and flavour development in the skins of the berries.

The Stoke Wines is proud to produce cool-climate, medium-bodied, well balanced, minimal intervention, food-style wines, including pinot gris, merlot blends, tempranillo, sauvignon blanc, skin-contact pinot gris and many more.

Ever a work-in-progress, the husband-and-wife team are currently working on doubling the size of the winery and are planting a large garden. Visitors can taste the Stoke wines on-site at the winery in Mount Jagged, exploring all the fantastic flavours the Kangaroo Island vineyards have to offer.

For those keen to depart the mainland for an island adventure, The Stoke Wines organises the ‘Island Jaunt’, where the winery takes guests for an overnight swag trip to Kangaroo Island. Island activities throughout the day lead to a cosy and rustic shearing shed for dinner. Revered chefs from Africola enhance the experience, cooking up a storm of local produce for everyone to enjoy.

The Stoke Wines has made it to the Top 50 in the Young Gun of Wine awards for two years running, and was number eight in the Adelaide Review Hot100 for its pétillant naturel.

Tasting Notes

2021 ‘Mufti Day’ Petillant Naturel
⇐ 2021 ‘Mufti Day’ Petillant Naturel

A blend of merlot and skin-contact pinot gris, this beautiful wine is clean, floral, musky and pretty on the nose. A fine bead is complemented by texture from the skin contact, allowing for a little substance without being too drying. The acid is fresh and summery – a dangerous summer wine.

2020 Cabernet Franc
⇐ 2020 Cabernet Franc

Handpicked and fermented with ten per cent whole bunches, plunged twice a day and pressed directly to aged French Oak once dry, this cabernet franc is has a savoury and complex nose, multi-layered and dynamic showing varietal spice and dark fruit. The palate is soft and well-balanced with supple tannins and a full mouthfeel.

2021 ‘Monty Blanc’ Sauvignon Blanc
⇐ 2021 ‘Monty Blanc’ Sauvignon Blanc

Sourced from a vineyard at American River and picked early to retain fresh acid and varietal character, this sauvignon blanc is fresh and varietal on the nose, showcasing a textured palate with a crisp acid line to carry the flavour and freshen the palate.

2020 ‘French for Shiraz’ Syrah
⇐ 2020 ‘French for Shiraz’ Syrah

This delicious syrah was picked early and fermented in separate portions, one being carbonic maceration, then pressed just before dry, and aged in old French Oak barrels. It is elegant in style, aromatic and approachable, yet complex and intriguing, full-flavoured and medium-bodied with a seamless structure and a nice acid line to carry the flavour.
