Skillogalee
Skillogalee
Skillogalee specialises in hand-crafted wines from its dry-grown vines. The vines are hand pruned and most of the fruit is hand-picked, with extremely low yields producing intensely flavoured and aromatic wines and deeply coloured reds. The vineyards were established in the early 1970s at nearly 500 metres above sea level, making them some of the highest vineyards in South Australia at the time.
Settled by the Trestrail family in the 1850s and originally known as Trevarrick Farm, the land has undergone various agricultural evolutions over the years, culminating in its transformation into Skillogalee more than fifty years ago. In 1989, Dave and Diana Palmer bought Skillogalee and embarked on their period of great vision and energy for the estate. The winery was built in 2003, further building the exceptional quality of Skillogalee’s wines. The Palmers created a restaurant in the historic cottage opening the first winery restaurant in the Clare Valley, setting a benchmark for vineyard hospitality in the region. In 2021, the Palmers retired and the Clausen family began their custodianship of the iconic estate.
In addition to its hand-crafted wines, its historic cellar door and acclaimed restaurant have been welcoming guests for over thirty years. Offering seasonal produce and breathtaking views, the restaurant has become a cherished gourmet food destination for generations of guests. For visitors eager to explore all that the Clare Valley has to offer, it provides a variety of boutique accommodation options, making Skillogalee the perfect place to relax and unwind.
Skillogalee has won many awards, national and international for its cellar door, restaurant and wines. Among its accolades, the winery is a proud recipient of the Gourmet Traveller Wine’s “Star Cellar Door & Best Accommodation” award, an honour the winery has achieved multiple times, underscoring its dedication to providing exceptional experiences. Additionally, it’s been honoured with the South Australian Tourism Champion title, recognising its contribution to the local tourism industry and its commitment to showcasing the best of South Australia. Its success extends internationally, with the Great Wine Capitals awarding Skillogalee the Regional Winner distinction.
Skillogalee believe that exceptional wine experiences go beyond what’s in the glass. Everyone has a Skillogalee story – what’s yours?
Tasting Notes
⇐ Trevarrick Riesling 2023
This beautiful wine offers refined acidity, a pure burst of citrus and mineral nuances – a testament to the distinctive terroir of ancient soils. Grapes are hand-picked from some of the highest altitude, slowest ripening contours on the estate. The stony soils and topography of this part of the vineyard produce unique fruit bursting with varietal character.
⇐ Trevarrick Cabernet Sauvignon 2021
A wine of stunning varietal character, crafted from fruit from a single contour vineyard on the high elevation slopes of the estate. Deep ruby in colour, with aromas of black currant, cherry, cassis and moorish notes of tobacco, cedar, and a hint of vanilla. Firm tannins, a rich palette, and a gloriously smooth finish. Winner, Best Cabernet Sauvignon – Sydney Royal Wine Show 2023.
⇐ Estate Riesling 2023
Vibrant and invigorating, this striking riesling weaves together refined acidity, a brisk splash of Tahitian lime, delicate floral scents, and harmonious mineral undertones. The 2023 vintage experienced minimal rainfall from Christmas to March, resulting in remarkable flavour development and ideal acidity.
⇐ Estate Shiraz 2022
This complex shiraz shows dark berry fruit flavours of plum skin and fennel seed spice, with a silky mid-palate core and long, finely structured tannins. Fruit from the dry-grown vines is hand harvested, sorted, and vinified in open fermenters. Grapes are then gently basket-pressed to preserve delicate fruit characters and velvety tannins before being barrel aged in oak for twelve-eighteen months.
