Skillogalee

Skillogalee

Skillogalee is a boutique, family-owned winery offering world-class handcrafted wines. The winery and vineyard was established in the late 1960s by the original owner, Spencer George.

Dave and Diana Palmer purchased the business in 1989, with Diana starting the first winery restaurant in Clare Valley in 1990. Visitors to Skillogalee can enjoy a real wine and food tourism experience.

The winery and vineyard are run in the most sustainable way possible: the vineyard is unirrigated, all organic waste is recycled, and all the fruit is processed in the purpose-built on-site winery powered by a solar array. Skillogalee aims to produce authentic wines with minimal intervention, to retain the integrity of the fruit.

The highly acclaimed restaurant and cellar door are situated in a 160-year-old stone settler’s cottage in a colourful garden setting, with seating inside by cosy log fires in winter, as well as outside along the veranda and under the shade of an ancient olive tree in warmer weather.

Guests can sample the range of wines as their meals are being prepared and learn a little about the history of the property, family and valley. Set among wooded hills and vineyards, Skillogalee also boasts well-appointed, self-catering accommodation options available for visitors.

Whether it’s a romantic luxury getaway or a family holiday, Skillogalee has something to suit everyone. The three cottages are all fully furnished and within easy walking distance of Skillogalee’s cellar door and restaurant.

The business has won numerous awards, including national and international gold medals and trophies for its wines, as well as tourism awards for its restaurant and accommodation premises.

⇐ 2018 Skillogalee Rosé

This 2018 rosé was made from dry grown cabernet sauvignon and malbec, and displays a brilliant crimson hue. There are aromas of wild strawberries and hints of spice. The palate is vibrant with a succulent balance of flavours including cranberry, blackcurrant and cherry before a lingering dry, savoury finish. ⇐ 2018 Skillogalee Riesling

The fruit for this dry riesling was grown on vineyard blocks up to 500m above sea level, where cool nights and slow ripening yield great flavour and crisp acidity. The nose and palate show classic Clare aromas and flavours of lemon and lime with floral overtones. Drink now with fish, seafood or white meat dishes or cellar for up to ten years.

⇐ 2016 Skillogalee Shiraz

Clare Valley red wines are often described as ‘rich but elegant’, and this shiraz comfortably fits the pattern. It was vinified in open fermenters and then gently basket pressed before twenty months of maturation in oak barrels. The wine has aromas and flavours of blackberries, dark plums and a hint of chocolate with some mint and spice. The distinct natural acidity makes it mouth-watering and versatile with food.

2016 Skillogalee The Cabernets

This wine is made from the two cabernet varieties: cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc. Skillogalee also blends in malbec to give richness and flavour to the middle palate. The result is a medium- to full-bodied wine with an aromatic nose of cassis, blackcurrant and roses. The palate is generous with mulberry, coffee and dark cherry. Subtle oak and fine-grained tannin add structure.
