Shingleback Wine
Shingleback Wine
The Shingleback Shiraz was the first wine produced by Shingleback Wine, winning the earliest of many awards – a gold medal at the Royal Hobart Wine Show. This estate shiraz is still at the heart of the winery portfolio, but the range has since expanded to include a number of award-winning brands, including Shingleback Red Knot, Haycutters, The Bio Project and The Gate. To date, the winery has received an astounding sixty-eight trophies and 562 gold medals across all of its labels.
Housed in the original barn of the Aldersy Farm, circa 1890, Shingleback Wine’s tasting room provides a rewarding experience for wine and history lovers alike. In winter, guests are encouraged to enjoy a glass of wine by the fire, while indulging in a personally selected regional platter.
In summer, the South Australian sunshine can be savoured either under the shade of the verandah or on the lawn, where visitors can take in the surrounding views of the winery’s Mataro vineyard. The knowledgeable and friendly team are always on-hand to offer tastings of current-release wines, as well as tasting room exclusives.
Shingleback Wine is a single-estate, family-owned winery that controls all aspects of its winemaking process, from growing the fruit on its Davey Estate vineyard, to the bottling of its unique wines.
Combining their passions for winemaking, farming and business, brothers Kym and John Davey collaborated to develop the estate that was first farmed by their grandfather in 1957. Today, the estate has grown to produce some of the most prestigious wines in McLaren Vale and has been named winner of the McLaren Vale Wine Show’s Most Successful Exhibitor from 2016–2020. Shingleback Wine has been recognised both domestically and internationally for its outstanding quality and consistency.
A modern yet minimalist approach has been taken in crafting its wines, with the belief that respecting the fruit is crucial to delivering premium products. This approach also represents a family that is committed to producing wines from the land it loves.
Tasting Notes
⇐ 2020 The Bio Project Monastrell Dry Rosé
Soft blush pink in colour, this rosé emits fragrant aromas of summer strawberries, heritage roses and orange oil. On the mid-palate, freshly crushed cranberry and citrus flavours overflow. Mineral notes and a cleansing natural acidity help these flavours linger on the finish.
⇐ NV Black Bubbles Sparkling Shiraz
The deep garnet colour alludes to the blackcurrant aromas, with hints of liquorice, spice and dark cherries. Creamy magenta bubbles and delicious sweetness consume the plump blackberry mid-palate, heightened with hints of savoury development. Fine tannin and acidity balance the long fruity finish.
⇐ 2019 Davey Estate Shiraz
Deep purple-red in colour, this shiraz has blackberry and mulberry on the nose, enhanced with spice, chocolate and roasted nuts. The rich palate is filled with more blackberry and chewy fruit tannins. Hints of roasted game and fennel bulb temper the sweetness by adding intricate layers to this complex wine.
⇐ 2018 The Gate Shiraz
Another vibrant purple-red shiraz, this wine has dark cherry and blackberry aromas, with hints of vanilla pod, milk chocolate and roasted nut. A fine tannin structure moulds the fresh compote of summer berry flavours into the long finish. This estate classic was awarded 97 points in the 2022 James Halliday Wine Companion.
