Pirathon Wines
Pirathon Wines
The north-west Barossa Valley is well known for its outstanding shiraz grapes, and the full bodied shiraz produced by Pirathon Wines succeeds in encompassing the great flavour and texture for which the area is known. ‘Pirathon’ is an ancient word meaning peak or summit, a well-suited name for this pinnacle, highly-awarded wine brand. Specialising in cabernet sauvignon, riesling and malbec, the winery produces twelve wines and processes 480 tonnes of grapes per year. Pirathon Wines uses its own facilities to ensure complete control over everything from the vineyard all the way through the winemaking process to produce the best possible wine.
The wine brand was purchased from the Kalleske family in 2017 and has since continued to build on its strong foundations and expand into new properties. In 2019, Pirathon Wines purchased the vineyards at Marananga, Vine Vale and Tanunda, and has recently expanded to include Gaelic Cemetery Vineyards and Lindsay Wine Estate. Across its multifunctional spaces, Pirathon Wines run the Barossa Gin School and offer unique wine experiences and tastings.
Pirathon Wines’ cellar door has a warm, friendly atmosphere. It boasts a central location, expansive landscaped gardens and lush lawns, making it the ideal venue for large outdoor groups utilising marquees or outdoor events under the stars. The Alchemy Bar and Terrace offers a private space with wood-fired oven, festoon lighting and a stunning backdrop of vineyards and gum trees. It can cater up to 200 guests for larger events but can still create an intimate atmosphere for smaller gatherings perfectly.
With the enchanting accommodation at the Lanzerac Country Estate just 2-kilometres away, this is the ideal location for weddings, corporate workshops or think tanks. The estate boasts five refurbished king suites with gorgeous gardens and a small lake. The adjacent Barn brings all guests together with combustion fireplace and small commercial kitchen and barbeque facilities.
Pirathon Wines regularly host wine, food and music events, as well as wood-fired pizza Sundays. Contact the cellar door for a wine experience like no other at this must-see destination.
Tasting Notes
⇐ 2021 Blue Label Shiraz
Ruby red with purple hues, this delectable wine showcases the regional shiraz characters of blueberry and milk chocolate with aromatic notes of reb berry, vanilla cream and malt. A small amount of Mataro has been added to increase the complexity with a savoury finish, while the twelve month maturation in older hogsheads enhances layers of biscuit and nutmeg spice.
⇐ 2020 Bronze Label Shiraz
With lifted notes of fresh red leather, blood plums and subtle floral aromatics, this cherry red shiraz is tantalising. The smooth and refined palate has a lovely freshness and vitality to it, with varietal plum flavours and underlying graphite, chocolate and pepperoni notes. Fine grained tannins round out the palate with a soft, long fruit driven finish.
⇐ 2018 Silver Label Shiraz
This deep red shiraz comprises a nose of savoury oak flavours of cloves, toast and warm spices intertwined with black fruits. It has a rich and inviting palate of blood plum and blackberry that meld around assertive ripe tannins. The savoury characters come to the fore with black olive tapenade, nutmeg and cured Barossa Valley meats.
⇐ 2017 Black Label Shiraz
There is no hiding the origin of this dark garnet wine with its big, rich and flavoursome style. The complex flavours of blood plums, cherry cola and smoked meats with black olive and liquorice notes are typically seen in the northern Barossa Valley. The added sweetness of oak brings out a supple texture to the ripe fruit of tannins.
