Petaluma
Petaluma
Founded in 1976, Petaluma has since thrived on its unique ‘distinguished vineyards’ winemaking philosophy. Following this ethos, special attention is paid to ensure that grapes and the soil in which they are grown are expertly paired to produce exceptional wine. Petaluma has vineyards in three different regions, which produce up to twenty wines per year of both still and sparkling premium varieties.
Riesling is grown in Petaluma’s Clare Valley vineyard, while Coonawarra houses cabernet, merlot and shiraz varietals. Recognising similar terroir characteristics to that of champagne in France, the winery was the first to plant in the Piccadilly region in the Adelaide Hills, where it now harvests remarkable chardonnay and pinot noir sparkling varieties.
The subtle hands-on treatment adopted by the Petaluma team, as well as the attention to detail they show their produce, ensures every wine is of the highest quality and perfectly captures the smells and tastes of the vineyard.
Petaluma is one of the few wineries of its size that still controls its wine from grape to glass. All grapes are delicately tended to and picked, carefully crushed and matured, before the final product is packaged and sold to the consumer.
As a testament to Petaluma’s quality, its wines have won multiple awards, including the winery’s most recent accolade; gold in the merlot category for its 2016 Petaluma Merlot at the 2018 Limestone Coast Wine Show. At the 2018 Clare Valley Wine Show, the 2018 Petaluma Cane Cut Riesling won Best Sweet Wine of Show and Best Single Vineyard Wine, while esteemed winemaker Mike Harms was awarded the Viticulturalist trophy.
With references to the three regions and Petaluma’s winemaking history, the Adelaide Hills cellar door offers fantastic views of Mount Lofty in the distance. As a James Halliday 5-star-rated winery, Petaluma is at the forefront of creating premium wines and providing visitors with an experience like no other.
Tasting Notes

⇐ 2018 Saul Riesling
Sourced from vineyards in the Eden Valley, the Saul Riesling exudes characters of lemon, lime and guava, which are supported by floral notes. The focused palate displays citrus flavours, stunning purity and mineral notes with crisp acidity. Serve chilled with fresh oysters, chilli prawn skewers or cured Atlantic salmon. Rated 95/100 by Halliday Wine Companion.

⇐ 2013 Petaluma Croser Piccadilly Valley Vintage Sparkling
A complex, elegant and creamy vintage sparking wine that features aromas of honey and cashew, which are complemented by an alluring citrus lift. The palate shows wild-strawberry pinot characters alongside a buttery nectarine chardonnay, before a soft yeasty finish is buoyed by a delightful green-apple acidity.

⇐ 2012 Petaluma Coonawarra
A blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot and shiraz, this wine displays blackcurrant flavours with a hint of plum, as well as spices and cedar. With wonderfully soft tannins, this wine presents hints of mocha and mint. This wine will age gracefully for many years.

⇐ 2015 Petaluma Hanlin Hill Clare Valley Riesling
The 2015 Hanlin Hill Clare Valley Riesling has bright floral aromas of citrus peel and orange blossom, with a hint of tropical fruit. Fragrant and lifted, the palate shines with a lively acidity and full rich lime marmalade. Crisp and focused, this riesling can be consumed now or will age gracefully into the medium term.
