Patrick of Coonawarra
Patrick of Coonawarra
Patrick of Coonawarra was established by celebrated winemaker Patrick Tocaciu, and the winery’s name reflects his iconic status within South Australia’s winemaking industry. During a decorated career spanning more than three decades, Patrick celebrated international accolades while working as a chief winemaker fro several major labels.
After years in the industry, the focus for Patrick switched to fulfilling a more personal goal in the establishment of the family-owned and -operated Patrick of Coonawarra in 1998. Patrick’s eldest son, Luke, has now taken over the family business and continues to produce highly regarded wines, following in his father’s footsteps.
Specialising in cabernet sauvignon and riesling varieties, but also producing other wines including sparkling whites, sauvignon blanc, shiraz and pinot noir, Patrick of Coonawarra produces only the highest quality fruit from its 80-hectares of enviable estate-owned and -managed vineyards, ensuring an unwavering commitment to quality.
Under Luke’s direction, Patrick of Coonawarra has stuck to what works while balancing this with a rebrand and new addition of the Méthode Range. The winery’s modern-day approach to winemaking is part art, part science, guided by principles, not rules.
Patrick of Coonawarra delivers handcrafted, premium wines that highlight what this gorgeous, cool-climate region has to offer. With a cellar door open to visitors seven days a week, you can enjoy the idyllic view while sampling a variety of wines or indulge in the chocolate and wine pairing experience. You can even soak up the sun and have a produce platter on the lawn.
The winery’s stellar reputation is further cemented by a string of awards, including five major trophies for the Two-Blocks Riesling and more than fifteen medals for every vintage released of the Block 5 Aged Riesling. Patrick of Coonawarra’s flagship 2012 Grande Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon was award 97 points by James Halliday, and the Home Block 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon 95 points. These accolades are a testament to the team’s dedication to producing handcrafted, quality wines.
Tasting Notes

⇐ 2012 Grande Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon
Rich, complex notes of tobacco leaf and cassis lead to a wonderfully fresh, structured palate with impeccable length. This is a wine made from the best rows, from the best vintages, from the Home Block Vineyard and will reward any wine lover or true connoisseur.

⇐ 2014 Block 5 Aged Riesling
This wine displays unique characteristics and distinguished flavours that only age and maturity can provide. It shows intense aromas of lemon butter and a distinctive, toasty character. The palate is delicately layered, showing lime blossom and a wonderful mouthfeel that extends to a crisp finish.

⇐ 2016 Home Block Cabernet Sauvignon
In this multi-award-winning wine, rich cassis and mulberry aromas combine with spice and cedar notes. The palate is concentrated with dark chocolate, blackcurrant and mulberry flavours with harmonised French Oak, adding hints of spice. The structure is fantastic with fine, elegant tannings leading to the long, balanced finish.

⇐ 2021 Méthode Eucalypt Cabernet Sauvignon
This distinctly Australian cabernet sauvignon was harvested from vineyards planted amongst gum trees, with the aim to test whether this method would influence the flavour and aromas. The resulting wine showcases balanced minty and Eucalyptus on the nose and palate, adding to the cabernet sauvignon’s complexity and successfully expressing the terroir.
