Patrick Tocaciu established Patrick of Coonawarra in 1998 to fulfil his dream of owning a vineyard and winery. Patrick had a decorated career spanning more than three decades, during which he celebrated international accolades. He was known for his love of good food, great friendships, laughter and a passion for winemaking which the winery still embodies to this day. Following Patrick’s unexpected passing, his son Luke stepped into the role of director, general manager and chief winemaker. Combining his father’s wisdom with new age trends, Luke has grown the consumer demand while continuing to produce highly regarded wines.

Patrick of Coonawarra owns over 85 hectares of vines, all which produce high-quality fruit every year. The aptly named ‘home block’ vineyard surrounds the Tocaciu family home in Coonawarra and yields quality low-hanging fruit, which is used for the Grande Reserve and Home Block cabernets. Another vineyard in Coonawarra ensures additional volumes of premium cool-climate fruit and is allowed a long ripening period for balanced acidity and flavour development. The Wrattonbully vineyard features three white and three red varietals, and the fertile soil provides the foundation for full-flavoured wines. Across all the vineyards, Patrick of Coonawarra practises the best viticulture techniques, including minimal spraying, organic composting and canopy management to ensure the wines are full of flavour and character.

Picnic on the lush grass and surround yourself with beautiful gardens at Partick of Coonawarra’s cellar door. The cellar door now features an eco-garden that has been carefully planted with specific plants to attract many kinds of insects that will help the vineyard. As well as wines, Patrick of Coonawarra sells a selection of decadent products such as olive oil, relish and chocolate. While the winery does not host a restaurant, you can participate in a self-guided wine and chocolate pairing experience or purchase a very generous food platter that comes with two complimentary glasses of wine.

Tasting Notes

2012 Grande Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon
⇐ 2013 Grande Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

Rich and complex fruit developing to leather and cedar oak dominate the aromas. The palate is seamless with cassis fruit, hints of tobacco and plum and a long, lingering finish. 32 months of maturation in 100% new, tightly grained French oak & 6 years bottle aged under cork before release.

2014 Block 5 Aged Riesling
⇐ 2018 Home Block Cabernet Sauvignon

Rich blackberry fruit is balanced with the subtle spice and cedar aromas. The palate is bold and complex with fine, elegant tannins leading to the long, balanced finish. The warmer vintage has allowed great varietal expression, rich fruit and a bold yet expressive cabernet.

2016 Home Block Cabernet Sauvignon
⇐ 2015 Block 5 Aged Riesling

This riesling shows intense aromas of citrus, lanolin and a distinctive toasty character. The palate is delicately layered showing lime blossom and a wonderful mouth feel that extends to a crisp finish.

2021 Méthode Eucalypt Cabernet Sauvignon
⇐ 2022 Méthode Oakre Chardonnay

A savoury style of chardonnay combines biscuit and melon fruits, with a subtle oak influence. The palate is complex with the new oak adding toastiness, the old oak extending the mid-palate and the red wine barrel adding a hint of ‘ochre’ colour and tannin complexity. An overall balanced and elegant wine that is textural and intriguing.
