Nepenthe

Established in 1994 as one of the first wineries in the Adelaide Hills, Nepenthe is known for producing premium cool climate wines that showcase the unique nature of the wild and diverse landscape. Nepenthe has a unique approach to their winemaking, believing that good wine is made in the vineyard and therefore have minimal intervention until the optimal picking time. Then it over to the capable hands of Nepenthe’s master craftsmen so that the wines are vibrant, fresh and textural.

Nepenthe is now B-Corp certified, showing its passion for protecting its vineyards and creating wines that express unique characters of the Adeliade Hills. From the 2024 vintage, all Nepenthe wines will have been certified by Sustainable Winegrowing Australia and all packaging, glass and tearaway capsules will be 100 percent recyclable.

Nepenthe boasts a large wine list, consisting of proven varieties such as pinot noir, shiraz, chardonnay, and sauvignon blanc as well as alternate varieties such as grüner veltliner, arneis, and albariño. Yearly, Nepenthe produces several different wines within its Altitude, Elevation, Ascend, Pinnacle and APEX collections.

Nepenthe has become one of Adelaide Hills’ benchmark wineries, known for producing premium wines that examples quality and regional expression and is recognised by both critics and consumers worldwide. Nepenthe’s wines have won multiple major accolades, including the 2022 Pinnacle albariño which won top gold at the National Cool Climate Wine Show in 2023.

Nepenthe currently owns three vineyards in Charleston, Hahndorf, and Balhannah. The Charleston vineyard is the largest, spanning over forty hectares, and the area is best for growing Nepenthe’s famous sauvignon blanc. Hahndorf is its second largest and the high altitude and cooler climate is ideal for growing the lesser-known alternate varieties. Home to Nepenthe’s cellar door, Balhannah is the smallest of Nepenthe’s properties, and its fertile soil and cool climate is perfect for delicate grape varieties like pinot noir.

Having recently been renovated, Nepenthe’s cellar door is a state-of-the-art building surrounded by vineyards and an extensive lawn that has some of the best views of the Mount Lofty Hills. To take full advantage of the stunning scenery, the new build now has floor-to-ceiling windows to ensure consumers will enjoy their wine tasing with a view of the vines and undulating hills.

Tasting Notes

2022 APEX Pinot Noir
⇐ 2022 APEX Pinot Noir

A single vintage wine, our APEX Pinot Noir is handpicked and fermented with fifty percent whole bunches to increase flavour and complexity before
maturing in oak for ten months. This wine displays aromas of cherries and raspberries and hints of potpourri. An amazing depth of flavour consisting
of red fruit with some dark cherry and sweet spice. The luscious mid palate then runs into a long silky finish.

NV Prestige Cuvee
⇐ NV Prestige Cuvee

Our sparkling is a blend of Chardonnay and pinot noir, the two varieties are crushed, pressed and fermented separately before blending just prior to
secondary ferment. Up front aromas of passionfruit and gooseberry with hints of fresh cut grass and green apple. A fresh, fruit driven palate with a
fine persistent bead. Layers of cream and softness, derived from the bottle fermentation are complemented by a crisp, clean finish.

2023 Pinnacle Barbera
⇐ 2023 Pinnacle Barbera

Our pinnacle range highlights the unique varietals that can be grown with our diverse wine region. This is a new varietal, being released for the first time in 2024. This is a full-bodied wine with lifted notes of blackberry and dark cherry on the nose. These flavours travel through to a soft yet fruit
midpalate and velvety tannin finish.

2023 Pinnacle Chardonnay
⇐ 2023 Pinnacle Chardonnay

One of the key varietals of the Adelaide Hills and our winemaker’s personal favourite varietal, our Pinnacle Chardonnay is truly special. This medium-bodied wine shows bright notes of nectarine and grapefruit on the nose, which extend to the palate and are underpinned by sweet spice
and hints of roasted hazelnut before a long, clean zesty finish.
