Mintaro Wines
Mintaro Wines
Mintaro Wines is a small, family-owned boutique winery that produces a range of premium red and white table wines bottled with the distinctive ‘drinking fish’ label. The winery produces fruit that is mostly dry-grown and handpicked from vines that are hand-pruned.
All wines are handcrafted using traditional methods, which are observed with meticulous attention to detail. Located in the historic town of Mintaro in the beautiful Clare Valley, the vineyards were originally planted in 1962 and subsequently incorporated into a functioning winery complex in 1984 by the present owner and wine producer, Peter Houldsworth.
Mintaro Wines has two reserve labels – series one and series two. Each series contains six bottles of magnificent red wine and feature labels of stunning works of art. Each series is presented in a specially marked wooden case.
Series one, reserve shiraz, is called Belles Femmes et Grand Vin and features six grand 19th-century paintings of beautiful women. Series two, reserve cabernet sauvignon, is called Leckie Window and features six stunning Greek mythological stained glass and leadlight images from a window designed and created by a prominent Australian artist in 1935.
Over the years, Mintaro Wines has won approximately 200 wine show awards across Australia, including the category win for Dry White (Riesling) at the 1989 Sydney International Wine Show, a gold medal at the 1995 Royal Adelaide Wine Show for a late-picked riesling and a gold medal for its shiraz at the National Wine Show in Canberra in 1996.
Recent awards include a gold medal and a trophy for its cabernet sauvignon at the Brisbane Wine Festival in 2001, a gold medal for its cabernet sauvignon at the Australian Small Winemakers Show in 2005, and gold medals for its riesling at the Clare Valley Wine Show in 2005, 2011 and 2013.
Tasting Notes
⇐ Mintaro Late Picked Riesling
This extremely moreish drink is a piece of sunshine in a glass – enjoy in a tall glass with lots of ice, a slice of lemon and a splash of soda. Displaying a nose of spiced apricots, pineapple, lime zest, kiwi fruit, honey and a whiff of perfume. On the palate, the lemon, lime and tropical interplay is carried by great acid zip with a creamy apricot finish.
⇐ Mintaro Riesling
Honeyed lime floats along the lemon sherbet river, the perfumed waters steeping it in smells of spice and flowers until it passes beyond your palate and leaves you looking for more.
⇐ Belles Femmes et Grand Vin Reserve Shiraz
Bottled chocolate filled with coffee, marzipan, eucalyptus and licorice in an earthy, charcoal wrapper. Eight to ten years in the cellar will tame the tannins, arouse the acid and fulfil the fruit’s potential – or you could always wrestle it to the ground now.
⇐ Leckie Window Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon
Tarred raspberries sprinkled with roasted spices and vanilla and nestled on a bed of roses form a path to your door. Drink with braised and spiced meats or duck and enjoy with your friends who all bought a case!
