Mallee Estate Wines is a true family-owned winery, the story of which started in the late 1960s when Peter and Eleni Markeas moved to Renmark and purchased their first fruit block. Between the passionate family of winemakers, welcoming staff, generous wine and food, Mallee Estate Wines is the perfect place to sit back and enjoy life’s simpler things.
The winery specialises in a wide range of varieties, thanks to the long summers the beautiful Riverland region accommodates. This advantageous climate allows Mallee Estate Wines to consistently grow grapes with ripe fruit flavours, firm acidity and soft silky finishes. The 45-hectares under vine produce chardonnay, riesling, pinot noir, shiraz, sparkling brut cuvee and muscat, to name just a few.
These distinctive wines can be enjoyed on every occasion, from everyday drinking to special events. Mallee Estate Wines has the best varieties for pre-dinner drinks, sun-drenched lunches, and delicious fortified wines for those cold winter nights.
Mallee Estate Wines offers daily guided tours hosted by the very passionate and talented second-generation winemaker, Jim Markeas. This detailed tour even includes a trip to the top of the tanks where you will be treated to stunning, picture-worthy views.
After the tour, stop by the restaurant for some authentic fine dining. Eleni’s Restaurant never fails to delight its guests; with Greek cuisine made lovingly from scratch by trained chefs, using recipes passed down from generation to generation. There’s plenty to enjoy, from chargrilled octopus to traditional moussaka and lamb souvlakia. Make a visit to the Estate Lounge too, where you can try some of the best cocktails in the area.
Offering friendly service, delectable food and even tastier wines, it’s no wonder why Mallee Estate Wines was the Riverland Winery of the Year at the New York International Wine Competition for five years running, and a finalist for the Best Greek Restaurant from 2019 to 2021.
Tasting Notes
⇐ 2014 P&E Markeas Shiraz
Produced from the first shiraz vineyard planted by founders Peter and Eleni in 1968, this flagship wine received the first Platinum Gold for Mallee Estate Wines. The 2014 vintage has been matured in one hundred percent French Oak barrels for a minimum of twelve months and shows black pepper and red berry fruit character on the palate.
⇐ 2018 Mallee Estate Shiraz
Purple in colour, the nose has hints of wild berries and plums. The palate is full-flavoured with dark cherries and balanced with vanilla from the fine American maturation. Fine velvety tannins lead to a smooth finish that will have you coming back for more all year long.
⇐ 2021 Mallee Estate Chardonnay
The estate chardonnay is the winemaker’s favourite wine, and often wins over visitors at the cellar door. It has beautiful tropical and ripe peach flavours on the nose that follow through to the palate. It is then balanced by a slight hint of vanilla. One sip of this and you won’t be disappointed.
⇐ 5 Year Old Reserve Muscat
There is nothing like a hot summer to ripen zibobo, making the most luscious muscat. The fruit is slowly fermented on skins, giving this muscat a rich and full flavour. It is then barrel-aged for a minimum of five years to become even richer and thicker in flavour.
