Hayes Family Wines

Hayes Family Wines

Thanks to its generations-old vineyards, Hayes Family Wines received a James Halliday 5-star-rating with its very first vintage in 2014; this exceptional rating has been retained every year since.

With winemaker Andrew Seppelt leading the way, Hayes Family Wines produces more than fifteen micro-quantity batches of traditional Barossa, old-vine wines each year. Specialising in shiraz, grenache, mataro and semillon, the organic-certified winery primarily sources its grapes from the Hayes Family Wines’ old-vine vineyard in Stone Well. Grapes are also sourced from Ebenezer and Koonunga in the Barossa Valley, as well as the Coonawarra region.

Hayes Family Wines’ hands-on approach to viticulture ensures that minimal intervention is required, with all of its vineyards hand-pruned, hand-picked and expertly managed throughout the year. The vegan-friendly wines are organically farmed from the 4.5 hectare Old Vine Estate Vineyard as well as the other vineyards from which the company sources its grapes. The winemaking process is carefully applied to promote the natural variations experienced from year to year to maximise the drinking experience.

By using a combination of traditional and modern winemaking techniques such as ceramic eggs, long ferments and extended skin contact when appropriate, Hayes Family Wines continues to produce award-winning wines.

With a number of international awards already in its pocket, including accolades from the Decanter World Wine Awards, the Melbourne International Wine Awards and the Australian Six Nations, the winery has also won trophies at local awards, including the grenache-dominant blend category at the 2018 Marananga Show for its 2017 Hayes Family Wines Estate GSM ‘Field Blend’. The Real Review has also taken notice of the winery’s constant achievements awarding it a spot on the list of Top Wineries of Australia in 2018 and 2019.

Nestled among the vineyards of its Stone Well estate, Hayes Family Wines’ cellar door offers various exclusive wines that are available for tasting and purchase. The cellar door also offers small-batch and fortified wines and spirits, including old brandy and sherry, all of which can be tasted on-site as part of various offerings and experiences.

Tasting Notes

⇐ 2018 Hayes Family Wines Barossa Valley Estate GSM ‘Field Blend’

This blended wine comes from Block 8 on the Stone Well estate vineyard, which comprises old interplanted vines that are organically farmed. Picked and processed as a single batch, this wine is a blend of grenache, shiraz and mataro, and displays the unique characteristics of the region and vineyard. It’s a beautiful drop to drink now, but will develop well if cellared for a decade.

⇐ 2018 Hayes Family Wines Vineyard Series ‘Glengrae’ Grenache

The very old, northern-Barossa Glengrae vineyard in Ebenezer is a small dry-grown, traditionally farmed bush block. In good years, it produces two tonnes of the most pristine, fragrant berries at low baume, which is perfect for this subtle grenache. With a beautiful fruit-driven palate, this delightful red displays bright spice characters that are unique to its growing conditions.

⇐ 2017 Hayes Family Wines Vineyard Series ‘Primrose’ Shiraz

This traditional Barossa shiraz carries the Ebenezer ironstone soils on its sleeve, with lifted vibrant blueberry and blackberry notes that are complemented by a classic peppery spice. It has a backbone of fine tannin that is sure to allow the wine to develop beautifully over the medium to long term.

⇐ Hayes Family Wines Very Old Tawny NV

Each year, the winery blends selections of its stocks of old traditional tawny (some more than fifty years old) to create a tiny release of this unique tawny. The average age of each batch is always in excess of thirty years, which provides a hugely complex yet vibrant palate. This is a wonderfully sweet wine to savour with the very best of friends.
