Hardys Tintara
Hardys Tintara
Proudly one of Australia’s most awarded wineries, Hardys Tintara is not only the perfect place to taste some fantastic wines, but to also indulge in its rich history, which spans back more than 170 years. A quick forty-five-minute drive from Adelaide, situated on the main street of McLaren Vale, it is certainly well worth the visit.
Hardys Tintara offers beautiful heritage buildings, a working winery and cellar door for one of Australia’s most well-known wine brands. First founded by Thomas Hardy in 1878, who transformed an old flour mill into a world-class wine cellar, the estate has continued to prove itself as an intrinsically valuable part of the McLaren Vale wine region, giving it heart and soul.
The original winery still stands, with the dedicated team of winemakers combining time-honoured winemaking techniques with modern technology to produce premium wines. Of these, the Thomas Hardy and Eileen Hardy icon wines, plus the exclusive back vintage Reynella Shiraz and Hardys Rare Fortified wines are ones to look out for.
Located in the property’s first cottage is the cellar door, bright and modern, with bespoke furniture and offering guests seated wine tasting experiences they’ll never forget. A Walk Through the Past tour and Tasting in the Dark are Hadys Tintara’s signiture experiences. In A Walk Through the Past, visitors embark on an intimate guided tour to immerse themselves in the rich history of Hardys, followed by a tasting of the icon and premium wines. Hosted once a day, bookings are required.
The Tintara Garden is home to the historic Moreton Bay Fig Tree, rumored to be the largest in the Southern Hemisphere. Planted in 1868, it is listed on the National Trust Register of Significant Trees. The lawn beneath the tree creates the perfect setting for an indulgent afternoon with an Eileen Hardy Picnic Hamper of locally sourced produce and a glass of the estate’s finest.
During the summer months, the terrace opens up for outdoor dining with entertainment, creating a new destination in the heart of McLaren Vale for all to enjoy. Visit the website or give the cellar door a call and make a booking for an experience like no other
Tasting Notes
⇐ 2017 Thomas Hardy Cabernet
This tribute to Thomas Hardy is vivid crimson in colour, displaying notes of fresh plums, mulberry and spices of clove, cinnamon and fragrant wild mint on the nose. The palate boasts a tight and muscular frame with more plum, mulberry and ripe blackberry flavours, with a long, mouth-watering finish of integrated oak and fine natural tannins
⇐ 2018 Eileen Hardy Shiraz
Reflecting Eileen Hardy’s spirited personality and love of adventure, this shiraz showcases a vibrant deep red colour, with chocolate, leather, black olive, plum, mulberry and blueberry aromas. The flavours are rich, layered with dark chocolate, ripe blueberry and plum combined with liquorice, peat and roasted coffee beans, the perfect accompaniment to beef cheeks with pomme puree.
⇐ 2019 Eileen Hardy Chardonnay
The straw colour gives way to the delicate bouquet of white florals, nectarine, almond meal and flint in this stunning chardonnay. The complex palate displays white florals and stone fruit, lingering with citrus and cream notes mixed with sandalwood and spice. With considerate cellaring, the Eileen Hardy Chardonnay will develop further over the next five to fifteen years.
⇐ 2019 Tintara Shiraz
Dark purple in colour with crimson hues, this bright and fresh shiraz has dark berry fruits with hints of raspberry, fennel and milk chocolate on the nose, bolstered by similar flavours on the palate that are typical of McLaren Vale shiraz. The texture is subtle, showcasing fine, velvety tannins for a well-balanced wine.
