Gibson Wines
Outside the picturesque village of Light Pass sits a hidden treasure – an original mid-nineteenth-century settler’s cottage and the cellar door of Gibson Wines. Producing quality, award-winning wines from the rammed red earth of northern Barossa Valley, Gibson Wines attributes its modern success to its rich historical heritage.
A winemaker with a wealth of experience, Rob Gibson established Gibson Wines in 1995. Now, with vineyards in Light Pass and Eden Valley, Gibson Wines produces twelve wines per year and specialises in shiraz and merlot. Other varieties include riesling and pinot gris, as well as botrytis sémillon, nero d’avola, tempranillo, zinfandel, montepulciano and fiano in the exciting Discovery Road range.
Nestled next to the Isabelle vineyard, the Gibson Wines cellar door is a modern, family-friendly site that features a pétanque court, hopscotch and toys for children.
Six times per year, Gibson Wines holds its Sunday Funday event; a relaxed afternoon full of music, food and wine, which is a must-see for visitors in the area. For those seeking a casual afternoon, the winery encourages visitors to cook their own fare on its barbecue facilities, free of charge. Locally produced chutneys, sauces and olive oils are also available for purchase at the cellar door.
Gibson Wines is a 5-star-rated winery with the Barossa Trust Mark for its Old Vine Barossa Shiraz. Having also been rated as a 5-star winery in the Halliday Wine Companion, Gibson Wines has etched its importance in the Barossa Valley wine region.
Tasting Notes
⇐2016 Gibson Wines Adelaide Hills Pinot Gris
This pinot gris shows typical characteristics of the varietal, and is a lovely pearly white colour. With hints of pear, woody notes and lemon sorbet aromas, the textured palate is full of flavours, rounded with a soft fruitiness and musk that lingers. This wine would pair harmoniously with many cuisines.
⇐ 2017 Gibson Wines Isabelle Cabernet Merlot
Deep red and purple in colour, the heady aromas of cassis and cherry with hints of vanilla and spice lift from the glass. Complex concentrated notes of dried fruit and blackcurrant are nicely integrated with savoury herb and chocolate flavours. The wine is very well balanced with firm tannins. It has a very long finish with lingering fruit chocolate flavours.
⇐ 2016 Gibson Wines Reserve Shiraz
Featuring an opaque purple hue, this lifted, sweet, spiced shiraz contains fruit characters on the nose with interesting notes of mocha, herb and blackcurrants. The palate is plummy, round and complex. It shows ample aroma and is balanced by perfect acidity and assuring dry tannins for ageing potential. The long, generous finish leaves spicy dark chocolate lingering on the palate.
⇐ 2019 Gibson Wines Eden Valley Riesling
Pale yellow with tints of green, this riesling has a complex aroma of grapefruit and lime. With a lively balance and a full, soft style, the lovely smooth, rich texture shows intense fruit flavours with lingering notes of citrus and grapefruit. Will age.
