Flinders Run Winery
Flinders Run Winery
Flinders Run Winery is nestled on the picturesque western slopes of the ancient Southern Flinders Ranges, offering a beautiful backdrop to the spectacular vineyard views. A short distance north lies Mambray Creek and Mount Remarkable National Park, with amazing treks through the ancient rocky gorges, breathtaking views of the rugged terrain and thriving native flora and fauna. Flinders Run Winery invites you to immerse yourself in a glass of wine amongst the region’s beauty.
The region’s climatic conditions are warm to hot, though the vineyard’s proximity to Spencer Gulf facilitates a cooling maritime influence. Focusing on these strengths, shiraz and cabernet sauvignon are Flinders Run Winery’s forte. With fourteen hectares of vines on site currently, Flinders Run Winery is currently producing three wines per year under the Flinders Run Baroota Creek label: a shiraz, a cabernet sauvignon and a cabernet shiraz blend.
The next generation of Flinders Run Winery’s wines is an exciting prospect. Committed to researching clonal diversity within specific varietals, the winery is undertaking a series of vineyard developments that will expand the current 14-hectares to include an additional 20-hectares. The new plantings will include grenache and Mataro in 2024, as well as negroamaro and nero d’avola in 2025.
Emanuel Skorpos, the owner and principal vintner, founded the Flinders Run Winery in 1997. With some thirty-two years of experience in the viticulture industry, he has come to understand and respect this ancient region’s terroir. Working alongside his wife, Laura Skorpos, who joined the company in 2001, they established Flinders Run Winery which is now recognised and highly respected as an international wine brand. Together they proudly fly the flag as ambassadors for this unique ancient region both domestically and internationally, as they inform the wine world of this emerging region that is growing and producing premium world class wines.
Flinders Run Winery has been internationally critically acclaimed since its debut on the international stage with its 2005 Flinders Run shiraz. Highly respected wine critics, including Robert Parker, Wine Spectator, Wine Showcase, International Wine Cellar and Wine Enthusiasts have recognised Flinders Run Winery’s reputation as a producer of full throttle red wines from an obscure and emerging wine region. Having been awarded consistent Five Star Gold Medal reviews of ninety to ninety-five points, the winery’s signature style is rich, ripe wines that are bursting with personality and flavour, capturing the essence of both the region and varietal expression.
Tasting Notes
⇐ 2020 Flinders Run Baroota Creek Cabernet Shiraz
Reminiscent of Grandma’s signature Christmas cake, this wine is jam packed with fruit flavours including blackberries, cherries and raspberries, and a hint of rhubarb and spice. It showcases Flinders Run Winery’s signature style of big and bold but with elegance and sophistication. A gentile swirl reveals an impenetrable depth of colour, with purple hues and a vibrant ruby red rim. A complex wine with layers of ripe fruits and structured tannins, it brings together a seamless marriage of these two grand varietals.
⇐ 2021 Flinders Run Baroota Cabernet Sauvignon
This rich and vibrant wine’s expansive personality leaps from the glass, delighting the senses with perfumed cabernet florals and fresh forest flowers. The palate comes alive with flavours of ripe cherries, blueberries, blackberries and currants that are wonderfully balanced and encompass an elegant veil of soft tannins that lead to a remarkably smooth and pure finish.
⇐ 2021 Flinders Run Baroota Shiraz
This wine portrays sexy, potent aromas of blackberries and raspberries with cherry-vanilla, smoky minerals and incense. A sweet personality lingers from the rich ripe berry flavours which stain the palate and betray no tannins. It gains power and sweetness with air and finishes with excellent clarity
and oak-spiced persistence. It has enormous immediate appeal but will benefit from some cellar time to develop into a lovely bouquet of native Australian flowers.
