“The year 2020 marks seventy-five years of winemaking history for Calabria Family Wines.”

Calabria Family Wines

Calabria Family Wines

Calabria Family Wines was established in New South Wales in 1945 by Italian immigrants Francesco and Elisabeth Calabria. Following family tradition, second-generation winemaker and Order of Australia recipient, Bill Calabria established the family’s Barossa operations in 2011. The year 2020 marks seventy-five years of winemaking history for Calabria Family Wines.

Calabria Family Wines has forty-five hectares of estate-owned vineyards spread across three separate locations within the Barossa Valley. Each vineyard has a different story; the jewel in the crown is its 100-year-old ‘William’ vineyard.

The Calabria family also works with six other family growers in the region to source fruit each year.

The Barossa Valley is home to Australian shiraz, and at Calabria Family Wines, the team produce four different styles of this favoured varietal. In addition to shiraz, varietals including cabernet sauvignon, durif, montepulciano, nero d’avola, mourvèdre and malbec are produced.

Nestled among the vines, the winery’s heritage bluestone villa – built in 1899 – is rich in Barossa family history. Today, this building houses the modern Calabria Tasting Room, and the Harvest Kitchen restaurant. The restaurant’s philosophy is founded on four key components: flavour, family warmth, honesty and generosity while also highlighting the wonderful heritage of the Calabria family.

Sitting at the base of the famous Mengler’s Hill Lookout Sculpture Park, Calabria Family Wines is in a prime position for visitors looking to spend the afternoon exploring the surrounding area. With the opportunity to participate in private, curated group tastings or exclusive premium wine tastings, you’re sure to be entertained all day long. You’ll also have the opportunity to taste wines crafted by 2019 Gourmet Traveller WINE Winemaker of the year finalist Emma Norbiato, the chief winemaker at Calabria Family Wines.

Producing 15,000 cases of wine each year, Calabria Family Wines’ Barossa site is revered for its Saint Petri Grenache Shiraz Mataro, which won Best in Show at the Decanter World Wine Awards in 2018; and the beautiful Calabria Wines ‘The Iconic’ Grand Reserve Shiraz, which earned 97 points in Halliday Wine Companion 2017. Or, for something truly unique, try the Kings of Prohibition range, notable for its character and bespoke packaging.

Tasting Notes

Calabria Iconic Grand Reserve Shiraz 1914 Centenarian Vines Barossa Valley

Hand-harvested, plunged and gravity fed to barrel under Bill Calabria’s watchful eye, this shiraz is alluring and flavoursome. The grapes were handpicked from nine rows of Barossa Centenarian vines planted in 1914, which have survived drought, flood, vine pull schemes and everything in between. What is left are gnarly and low yielding vines carefully restored and nurtured by the Calabria Family.

⇐ Calabria Saint Petri Shiraz Carignan Barossa Valley

Crafted by Chief Winemaker, Emma Norbiato, the wine is a blend of two grape varieties from three vineyards in the Barossa Valley. The carignan fruit is sourced from two vineyard blocks; one old and one young. The shiraz grapes selected for this wine are more than fifty years of age and display a dense core of fruit. This wine is a Platinum medal winner, awarded at the Decanter World Wine Awards.

⇐ Calabria Saint Petri Grenache Shiraz Mataro Barossa Valley

Sourced from three vineyards in Barossa Valley, this wine is handcrafted, showcasing the iconic region’s ancient, low yielding vines, remarkable soil and exceptional finesse. This wine was awarded Best in Show at the Decanter World Wine Awards in 2018.

⇐ Calabria Francesco Grand Tawny Barossa Valley

The fruit used within this wine was harvested from various vineyards over the last twenty years. Rich and luscious on the palate, exhibiting mocha, raisin and molasses intensity, this wine is held together by finely aged, oak tannins.
