Amadio Wines
Amadio Wines
In 1936, Italian immigrant Giovanni Amadio commercially registered his dry table wine after years of making wine for family and friends. Giovanni sourced his grapes from a nearby leased vineyard and made his fruity, well-crafted wine from his own cellar. His modern, Italian-style wine proved to be a welcome newcomer to a local market that consisted of sweet, high alcohol fortified wines such as sherry and port.
Word of this lighter and drier style of wine rapidly spread interstate, resulting in orders from businesses in Melbourne’s fashionable Lygon Street. As a keen operafan, Giovanni was delighted that his wine became a favourite with singers from the touring Italian Opera Company. Giovanni’s wine was successfully produced for many years, and his family cultivated a sincere appreciation for premium winemaking.
In 1985, Giovanni’s son Gaetano – with help from his family – invested time and money into planting his first vineyard in the pristine Adelaide Hills region. This was a bold venture, given that it was uncharted vineyard territory at the time. Gaetano’s instinct and vision for the region, combined with his well-informed subsequent
plantings and years of diligent work, lead to his premium range of wines gracing the tables of households and top restaurants throughout Australia and overseas
Gaetano proudly passed on his family’s winemaking tradition to his son Danniel, who created the Amadio range of wines. Danniel sources much of his premium fruit from his family’s vineyard in Kersbrook, and maintains a limited case of every wine range to ensure hands-on production standards.
The Amadio range embraces the best fruit flavours and terra rossa characteristics of each regional varietal, producing wines of great depth and natural character. The impressive list of national and international trophies and gold medals awarded to Amadio Wines is a testament to its consistent standard of premium-quality wines, which are founded on an integral legacy of family winemaking.
In 2017, Amadio Wines proudly opened a new cellar door on Kangaroo Island. Equipped with a licensed alfresco area and housed in a heritage building, the new cellar door is located at 1 Commercial Street, Kingscote. The new establishment also has a restaurant, perfect for pairing one of Amadio Wines’ renowned beverages with some delicious food.
Tasting Notes
⇐ Amadio Pinot Grigio
This fresh and lively single vineyard Adelaide Hills pinot grigio displays exceptional cool-climate characteristics; Nashi pear and lemon citrus on the nose and stunningly crisp bluestone minerality. These aromas develop into guava, green lime and hints of honey on the palate, and ends on a dramatic clean and crisp finish that identifies the true meaning of balanced acidity.
⇐ Kangaroo Island Shiraz
This shiraz is beautifully balanced with a flavoursome intensity that is soft and lingering. Aromas of lifted blackberries, sweet fruit, combined with black olive and black pepper
spice add interest. This follows through onto a rich palate of chocolate powder mixed with blueberries.
⇐ Amadio Sagrantino
This wine features intensely juicy aromas of rhubarb, stewed fruits, cherry and raspberry; bright red and full-flavoured fruits. The back
palate is very subtle but offers some great secondary characteristics such as toasted oak and a delicate but obvious hint of black pepper.
The finish is reminiscent of jam, thanks to subtle tannins and acid. This great wine can even be enjoyed slightly chilled on a hot summer’s day.
⇐ Ruby’s Rosé
This wine is the only merlot-dominant rosé in Australia and is modelled on the Bordeaux version, which is predominantly made from the merlot grape. Having spent a greater time with skin contact, it has extracted a greater depth of flavour and a darker ruby colour. Lifted aromas of strawberry, toffee and cranberry are evident and follow through with a textural and rounded middle palate. Integrated with cool climate viticulture, this wine provides a clean, acidic backbone that is balanced and provides a crisp, dry and refreshing finish.
