Majella Wines
Majella Wines
Brian and Anthony Lynn planted Majella Wines’ first vineyard in 1968 on the eastern edge of Coonawarra’s renowned terra rossa strip – a 20-kilometre long, linear strip of land that is known for having the best viticultural soils in the world. The Lynn family have been in the Coonawarra district for five generations working in many different trades, but it was the brother duo that decided to diversify from prime lamb production to establish Majella Wines. The company now has 60-hectares under vine – fifty-five percent is planted with cabernet sauvignon, thirty-five percent with shiraz and the remainder with merlot and riesling – with the rest of the property still used for sheep grazing.
Majella Wines has gained an unshakable reputation for consistently producing award winning wines that have a unique and distinctive style. Specialising in cabernet sauvignon, shiraz and cabernet/shiraz blends, Majella Wines offers an impressive range that caters to a variety of pallets. The Malleea and The Musician are perfect examples, both of which have something uniquely Australian about them and are always a favourite among wine enthusiasts. Alternatively, Majella Wines’ straight varietals showcase the true essence of Coonawarra and their sparkling shiraz is a true delight for all occasions. As well as wines, Majella Wines is now also producing a dry, simple gin and a distinctive, fragrant eau de vie.
Majella Wines has attained a Halliday 5-red star rating, marking it as an outstanding winery that produces wines of exemplary quality and typicity. It is unsurprising, then, that Majella’s wines consistently do well on the show circuit. The current release of The Musician has won multiple prestigious trophies, such as the Adelaide Wine Show’s Dr Ray Beckwith OAM Memorial Trophy for Best Traditional Australian Red Blend in Show, and the whole range has won twenty-one trophies, forty-seven gold, thirty-eight silver and sixty bronze medals to date. Majella Wines’ cabernet sauvignon has also won a staggering number of awards, including 111 gold medals.
Majella Wines is more than just a winery. It is a way of life for the Lynn family, with six family members of the next generation joining the company in various roles, so Majella Wines’ future is in safe hands. The cellar door is open for sales every day and as you look out at the picturesque vineyards from the deck, you may catch a glimpse of the sheep grazing amidst the vines during the off season.
